Buses usually depart from the Old Bus Park or the Gaushala area in Kathmandu. Aim for the early morning departures around 6:30 AM – 7:00 AM to beat the worst of the Kathmandu valley exit traffic.

• The Jeep (The Faster, More Agile Choice):

  • Cost: $12–$22 USD.
  • Duration: ~3 hours.
  • Vibe: Much more comfortable and significantly more reliable on the narrow, winding sections of the BP Highway and the feeder roads toward Jiri. Because Jeeps can handle the terrain better, you will find fewer delays.

Our Recommendation: For the Jiri route, hire a seat in a local Jeep. While the bus is cheaper, the road conditions toward the end of the journey can be rough. A 4WD Jeep provides a smoother ride and the agility to navigate around larger vehicles stuck on hairpin turns.

• The "Exit" Ritual: Leave Kathmandu as early as possible. Traffic at the Koteshwor bottleneck can turn a 15-minute exit into an hour-long ordeal.
