The Transport Reality Check

Because there is no direct road access from Namche Bazaar, this journey is a two-part mission. You must first trek down (or take a helicopter) to Lukla, fly to Kathmandu, and then tackle the long-distance bus journey to Lamahi.

• The Bus Experience: Once you are in Kathmandu, you will head to the Gongabu New Bus Park. Expect a 15-hour marathon. These buses are the workhorses of Nepal—functional, crowded, and rarely luxurious. You will be sharing the aisle with locals, sacks of rice, and perhaps a crate of chickens.
• The Cost & Comfort: Expect to pay between $20 and $37 USD for a seat. Don’t expect reclining luxury; the roads through the winding hills of the Prithvi Highway are notorious for sharp hairpin turns and sudden traffic jams.
• The Recommendation: If you are prone to motion sickness, take a night bus. You’ll be asleep for the worst of the winding mountain passes, waking up as the bus hits the flatter, straighter roads of the Western Terai.

• Avoid the Taxi Trap: If you arrive in Kathmandu via flight and need to get to the bus terminal, do not take the first taxi you see at the airport gate. Walk outside the terminal perimeter or use the "Pathao" app to avoid being significantly overcharged.
• Road Conditions: During the monsoon season (June–September), landslides are a frequent reality on the highway leading toward Lamahi. Keep a flexible itinerary; if the road is blocked, your 15-hour trip can easily turn into 20.
